2018 is already one of driest year in the history of The Netherlands since the official weather recordings of 1901. The water level of all the main rivers have dropped significantly and the impact is clearly visible. I live nearby the river called ‘Lek’. One of the branches of this river supplies the water of a canal surrounding the burrow called ‘Werk aan het Spoel’. A few weeks ago, this canal was almost completely empty because of the lack of rain in the last months. Normally, the river bed is off limits, except for the fish and water birds. Now, you can walk in the canal and look for hidden treasures.

Decades long,
An unsung song,
In the water submerged.
A flaming torch,
To crack and scorch,
Now, they have emerged.
